Kumbhalgarh Fort was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha of Mewar, perched about 1,100 metres up in the Aravalli hills of present-day Rajsamand district. It is best known for its immense fortification wall, which runs for many kilometres along the hill's contours and is popularly described as the second-longest continuous wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The fort is also traditionally noted as the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, one of Mewar's most celebrated rulers.
Inside the fort walls lie more than 360 temples, along with palaces, water reservoirs, and the Badal Mahal (Palace of Clouds) that offers views over the surrounding Aravalli range. The fort's massing and successive defensive rings reflect its role as one of the most important seats of Mewar power alongside Chittorgarh.
In 2013, Kumbhalgarh was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the serial "Hill Forts of Rajasthan" World Heritage property, recognised for its representation of Rajput military hill-fort architecture across the region.
