Your Experience

Discover one of Kyoto's most sacred hidden experiences as you explore Shinto traditions through guided prayers, ritual offerings, and an authentic takigyo waterfall purification ceremony at a secluded shrine.

Getting started

Meet your certified English-speaking guide in front of FamilyMart at Tofukuji Station, where your small group will gather before heading to the hidden Goshano-taki Shrine. After a warm welcome and introduction, your guide will explain the significance of the shrine, the sacred waterfall, and the centuries-old practice of takigyo, a traditional Shinto purification ritual.

What to expect

  • Begin with an introduction to the shrine and the spiritual meaning of the waterfall, followed by an overview of the experience and ritual etiquette.

  • Learn to copy Shin-kotoba (sacred words), an important part of Shinto practice, before preparing ritual offerings together with the priest.

  • Change into traditional white ritual attire if you've selected the Water Purification option. Under the priest's guidance, receive blessings before stepping beneath the sacred waterfall for the takigyo purification ritual. Guests on the No Water Purification option can observe the ceremony while participating in the remaining spiritual activities.

  • After the ceremony, refresh with a warm shower before enjoying sacred sake or non-alcoholic amazake in a relaxed setting.

  • Conclude your visit with an interactive Q&A session, where you'll gain deeper insight into Shinto beliefs, the symbolism of waterfall purification, and the role these traditions continue to play in Japanese culture.

Whether you choose to experience the waterfall purification yourself or observe the ritual, this intimate 2.5-hour small-group tour offers a rare opportunity to connect with Kyoto's spiritual heritage beyond its famous temples and shrines.
