The Laxman Temple stands within the Sirpur Group of Monuments on the banks of the Mahanadi river in Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh. Built in the 7th century CE during the reign of the Sharabhapuriya or early Somavamsi dynasty, it is regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of brick temple architecture in India, constructed almost entirely of brick with stone used selectively for the carved doorframe, sculptures and base. The temple came to wider attention after Alexander Cunningham's 1882 survey report brought Sirpur into the archaeological record, and it has since been protected and studied by the Archaeological Survey of India. Excavations at the wider Sirpur site resumed in 1953 and expanded significantly after 2003, when 184 mounds were identified across the settlement, revealing Sirpur as a major multi-religious urban centre with Hindu, Buddhist and Jain monuments dating from the 5th to 12th centuries.
