Lohagad, meaning "Iron Fort" in Marathi, is a hill fort rising to about 1,033 metres above sea level near Lonavala in Pune district. Over the centuries it passed through the control of several dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, the Bahamani Sultanate, the Nizams and the Mughals, before coming under Maratha rule.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured Lohagad in 1648, but was compelled to cede it to the Mughals under the 1665 Treaty of Purandar. He recaptured the fort in 1670 and is said to have used it to store his treasury. The fort's structures include a series of fortified gates and the Vinchu Kata, a narrow spur fortification resembling a scorpion's tail.
In 2025, Lohagad was inscribed by UNESCO as one of twelve component forts making up the "Maratha Military Landscapes of India" World Heritage property, recognising its role in the defensive network that supported Maratha military power.
