Departure at 09:00 from the Petruzzelli Theater in Bari to Altamura, approximately one hour by car from Bari.
Situated on the dominant hills of Murgia within a national park, Altamura has a very interesting historic center with a grand Cathedral dating back to the medieval period. The Cathedral is famous for its portal adorned with stone decorations. Altamura is renowned for its typical local bread, considered the best in Italy and bearing the high-quality DOP mark. You will find many stone ovens where you can taste the city’s traditional dishes made with wheat.
Leaving Altamura, we will reach Matera after approximately 30 minutes. In Matera, we will have a 2-hour walking tour and visit this incredible and unique city carved into the hills of Murgia. Its historic center, dug into a deep ravine, is the first UNESCO site in southern Italy, where people lived in cave houses from prehistoric times until 1952.
We can stroll through the well-preserved alleys and paths of the two wonderful districts called Sassi. We will visit rock churches with Byzantine frescoes, cave houses, the medieval Cathedral, and the noble quarter of this ancient city known as the “Italian Bethlehem,” where many films, including Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, were shot.
After the walking tour, you will have one hour of free time in Matera for shopping or lunch. The historic center is full of trattorias, restaurants, and bars.
Around 15:00, we will leave Matera to return to Bari, approximately one hour away.
Note: the sequence of city visits may be subject to operational changes.
