Your Experience

Mattancherry Palace, popularly known as the Dutch Palace, is located in Mattancherry, Kochi, about 12 km from Ernakulam in Kerala. It was built around 1545 AD by the Portuguese and presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma, reportedly to pacify him and compensate for the plundering of a nearby temple. It underwent major repairs by the Dutch, giving rise to its popular name.

The palace is one of the oldest examples of Portuguese architecture with oriental influence, a two-storied quadrangular building with long, spacious halls that blend European and indigenous architectural styles. Its central courtyard enshrines the tutelary deity of the Kochi royal family, Pazhayannur Bhagavathi.

The palace's greatest attraction is its mural paintings, covering nearly 300 square metres and executed in three historical phases, depicting scenes from the Ramayana among other themes. It was restored and declared a centrally protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1951, and now functions as a museum displaying artefacts and regalia of the former Kochi royal family.
