Inside the Chapels

Start beneath the main chapel in the Medici Crypt, where simple tombs hold lesser-known family members. Carved coats of arms and inscribed dates trace their lineage on the walls.

Move up to Michelangelo’s New Sacristy, a chamber designed as a tomb featuring sculptures like Dawn, Dusk, Day, and Night. Light and shadow highlight the raw emotion in these unfinished works.

Finish in the Chapel of the Princes, an octagonal hall with a vast dome and walls of marble and semi-precious stones. Six grand tombs display the family’s wealth and ambition.
