Presenting the "Birth of Hot Springs" in an academic and entertaining way, this tour offers a deeper understanding of the hellish culture of Beppu Kanwa.
The Hell Hot Spring Museum (地狱泉ミュージアム) is located in Kannawa, Beppu. It focuses on the question, "Why are hot springs called hell?" and explains how rainwater combines with minerals underground to transform into hot springs over time. The museum uses immersive visual and sound performances to help visitors rediscover that hot springs are a gift from nature, while also learning about the lifestyle and community spirit of Beppu and Kannawa.
Famous for its dreamy cobalt blue hot spring pools, Umi Jigoku is one of the largest hot spring pools in Beppu Hell. The garden also uses hot spring heat to cultivate Daiki-ren (Oki-ren) and tropical water lilies, with a flowering period from early May to early November.
This site features bubbling gray mud resembling the head of Onishibozu. Visitors can see the geyser "Oni no Takakura" with steam rising at about 100°C. There are also foot bath facilities, subject to availability.
The recommended visit time to the Hell Hot Spring Museum is approximately 60 minutes. The museum features performances with visuals, sound effects, and dark scenes. Operations may be adjusted or suspended in the event of natural disasters or equipment failures. Due to the floating/rushing sensations in the visuals, which may cause discomfort, it's advised that young children, the elderly, pregnant women, those who are unwell, prone to dizziness, those with abnormal blood pressure/heart disease, those sensitive to special effects, and those with a fear of such experiences avoid this attraction.
