Create Your Own Washi Paper Lamp in Osaka
Discover Osaka through an exclusive artistic experience designed for travelers seeking something genuinely rare and memorable.
Meet your host and Washi paper artist, James, who will be waiting to welcome you at Osakako Station, Exit 6, by 9:20 (morning session) or 15:20 (afternoon session).
From there, you are escorted to a quiet creative space where you will participate in an intimate washi lamp workshop led by James, whose distinctive work reimagines traditional lantern design.
Unlike typical paper lanterns that prioritize form alone, this experience reveals the Japanese philosophy of light and material, where texture, fibers, and illumination are as important as shape. Under James’s guidance, guests design and assemble their own sculptural washi paper lamp, embracing his signature aesthetic of flowing curves and organic lines.
While your lamp dries, enjoy a relaxing interlude at a local café. A drink is included, with the option to savor high-quality traditional matcha — a moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the slower rhythms of Japanese culture.
Once your lamp is complete, you will carefully pack your handmade piece — a functional artwork and deeply personal souvenir — before you are free to leave, say goodbye to James, and continue your journey through Japan.
Meet the Artist
James’s artistic path is anything but conventional. Beginning with body painting and later collaborating with Universal Studios Japan, his fascination with fluid, organic lines naturally evolved into washi lamp art. His designs reject rigid geometry — no straight lines, only gentle curves inspired by movement and light.
He works with exceptional materials, including rare mulberry-fiber paper and Mino Washi, a historically significant paper from Gifu Prefecture recognized for its cultural value. His contributions to Japan’s Akari Art Festival have earned multiple awards, with one piece preserved in a museum collection.
Through this workshop, guests not only create a personal artwork but also participate in sustaining a traditional craft facing modern challenges.
The Artistic Perspective: Washi & Light
This experience offers more than a craft workshop; it provides insight into Japan’s unique relationship with paper and light. In Western traditions, lanterns often emphasize geometry and structure. Japanese washi lanterns, by contrast, celebrate the paper itself — its softness, fibers, and the way it diffuses light to shape atmosphere rather than brightness. By introducing unconventional forms into washi lamp design, James creates works where material and shape exist in visual harmony. Even Japanese visitors frequently remark on the originality of these creations — familiar in medium, yet entirely new in expression.
This is a discreet, design-driven cultural experience created for guests who value authenticity, artistry, and meaningful connection with Japanese craftsmanship.
