Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu's Fort, was built in 1766 by Hyder Ali of Mysore to consolidate his control over the region during the Mysorean campaigns in Malabar. It later came under the control of his son Tipu Sultan, who used it as a significant military base during his campaigns against the British.
The fort is square in plan, supported by square-shaped bastions and walls, and spreads over an area of about 60,702 square metres in the middle of Palakkad town. It is noted for the craftsmanship of its construction, with French engineering influence often cited in accounts of the fort's design.
Within the fort complex are a Hanuman temple, a small Anjaneya Swami shrine, a martyr's column, a garden, and a sub-jail. The fort is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as a protected monument.
