The Adamgarh rock shelters sit on a hillock south of the Narmada river, about 2 km south of Narmadapuram town (historically known as Hoshangabad) in Madhya Pradesh, roughly 40 km from the world-famous Bhimbetka rock shelters. The site was discovered by Manoranjan Ghosh in 1922 CE, with further research subsequently carried out by D.H. Gordon and other archaeologists.
Around 18 rock shelters have been identified at Adamgarh, belonging to the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, of which 11 retain visible paintings in red and white pigment; the rest have faded over time or been damaged by vandalism. Excavated shelters have yielded cultural deposits spanning the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and early historical to medieval periods. The site, extending across about 19.70 acres, is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, and is fenced to guard against damage.
