The lake beside Purana Qila lies along the fort's western ramparts, within the wider Purana Qila complex that stands on the site traditionally linked to ancient Indraprastha. The lake offers boating facilities against the backdrop of the fort's rubble-masonry walls, which rise up to 21 metres in places, giving visitors a view of the citadel's silhouette from the water.
As part of the Purana Qila grounds, the surrounding area falls within the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India, while the lake and its boating operations are managed separately from the ticketed monument itself.
