Raigad Fort is a hill fort in Mahad taluka, Raigad district, that rose to prominence in 1674 when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made it the capital of the Maratha Empire and held his coronation there. Perched on a steep hilltop, the fort's design exploited its natural defensive terrain, with fortified gateways, bastions and the remains of palace structures, markets and administrative buildings from the Maratha court.
The fort remained central to Maratha rule after Shivaji Maharaj's death and later passed through subsequent regimes before falling into ruin. Today its surviving structures, including the Jagdishwar temple where Shivaji Maharaj's samadhi (memorial) lies, and the ruins of the Rajsabha (royal court), attract visitors interested in Maratha history.
In 2025, Raigad Fort was inscribed by UNESCO as one of twelve component forts of the "Maratha Military Landscapes of India" World Heritage property, recognising the fort's central role in the political and military history of the Maratha Empire. The fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, and a ropeway now supplements the traditional trekking route to the summit.
