Rajarani Temple stands in Bhubaneswar, Khordha District, Odisha, northeast of the Lingaraj Temple. Built around the mid-11th century CE, likely under the Somavamshi dynasty, the temple takes its name not from any royal patron but from 'Rajarania', the fine-grained yellowish sandstone used in its construction.
The temple follows the pancharatha plan, with a vimana (sanctum tower) rising to about 18 metres and a jagamohana (pillared hall) topped by a pyramidal roof. It is especially renowned for the tall, slender nayika sculptures carved on the sanctum's exterior walls, shown in varied decorative and amorous poses. The sanctum currently holds no deity image. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the temple as a centrally protected, ticketed monument, and it hosts the annual Rajarani Music Festival featuring Hindustani, Carnatic and Odissi classical music.
