Ram Bagh, originally called Aram Bagh, is considered the oldest surviving Mughal garden in India, laid out by the first Mughal emperor, Babur, after his conquest of Hindustan in 1526. It served briefly as Babur's temporary resting place before his remains were later moved to Kabul, and it was subsequently renovated by Emperor Jahangir between 1615 and 1619.
The garden follows the classic charbagh layout, divided into four quarters by axial walkways and water channels, reflecting the Central Asian and Persian garden traditions that the Mughals brought to India. During the Maratha occupation of Agra between 1774 and 1803, the garden's name was changed from Aram Bagh to Ram Bagh, a name it retains today.
Situated about 5 km from the Taj Mahal, the garden today is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as a quiet green space illustrating the earliest phase of Mughal landscape design in India.
