Your Experience

The Residency in Lucknow was built as the official residence of the British Resident at the court of the Nawab of Awadh, constructed during the reign of Nawab Saadat Ali Khan between around 1780 and 1800. The complex grew into a cluster of buildings, including the Resident's main house, a banqueting hall, a church, and other outbuildings, set within landscaped grounds.

The Residency is best known for the Siege of Lucknow during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when British residents and troops, along with loyal sepoys, held out for several months against besieging forces before being relieved. The buildings still bear visible cannon and bullet damage from the siege, left largely unrepaired as a deliberate memorial.

Today the site is preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, with a museum inside the main Residency building displaying artefacts, models, and documents related to the siege and the events of 1857.
