The Rock-cut Caves of Badami comprise four main cave temples carved into the soft sandstone cliffs overlooking Agastya Lake in Badami, once known as Vatapi, the capital of the Badami Chalukya dynasty from the 6th to 8th century CE. The caves display Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist religious themes and represent a fusion of northern (Nagara) and southern (Dravida) architectural styles.
An inscription in Cave 3 records its dedication by the Chalukya king Mangalesha in Saka 500 (578/579 CE), making it one of the oldest firmly-dated Hindu cave temples in India. Cave 3 is the largest of the group and is renowned for its finely carved sculptures of Vishnu in various forms, while other caves are dedicated to Shiva and Jain tirthankaras.
