Your Experience

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves comprise 33 rock-cut caves (18 on Udayagiri hill and 15 on Khandagiri hill) on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Khordha District, Odisha. They were excavated between roughly the 2nd and 1st century BCE as monastic dwellings for Jain monks under the patronage of the Chedi dynasty king Kharavela.

The largest and most celebrated cave is Rani Gumpha ('Queen's Cave'), a double-storeyed excavation on Udayagiri hill. Hathigumpha cave on the same hill bears Kharavela's famous 17-line Brahmi inscription, which records his military campaigns and reign in detail and is one of the most important sources for early Kalinga history. The caves were declared centrally protected monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1956.
