The Udayagiri Caves are a group of twenty rock-cut caves and shrines on a hill about 6 km from Vidisha, dedicated mainly to Vishnu and Shiva, with one cave devoted to Jain iconography. The caves were excavated primarily between the early 3rd and 5th centuries CE and reworked extensively under the Gupta emperor Chandragupta II, making Udayagiri one of the few sites that can be verifiably linked to a specific Gupta monarch through its inscriptions, including those of Chandragupta II and Kumaragupta I.
The site's best-known feature is the monumental relief of Vishnu in his Varaha (boar) incarnation, shown rescuing the earth goddess Bhudevi, regarded as one of the finest examples of Gupta-period sculpture. The caves are managed as a centrally protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
