Safdarjung's Tomb was built between 1753 and 1754 as the mausoleum of Safdarjung, who served as viceroy of Awadh under the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah and later rose to the position of prime minister of the Mughal Empire under Ahmad Shah Bahadur. It is generally regarded as the last monumental garden-tomb built in Delhi in the tradition established by Humayun's Tomb, though on a considerably smaller scale, reflecting the diminished resources and authority of the Mughal court by the mid-18th century. It was also notable as the first such tomb-garden built for someone outside the immediate Mughal imperial family.
The sandstone-and-marble mausoleum follows a charbagh plan with the tomb at its centre, a ninefold floor arrangement, and a five-part facade raised on a podium with a concealed stairway. Its two-storeyed entrance gate carries an ornate facade and an Arabic inscription. The wider complex includes several smaller pavilions, known as Jangli Mahal, Moti Mahal and Badshah Pasand, along with a madrasa; the Archaeological Survey of India maintains a library above the main gateway.
