Shaniwar Wada was the fortified palace-residence of the Peshwas, the hereditary prime ministers of the Maratha Confederacy, built under Peshwa Baji Rao I starting in 1730 and completed in 1732. It served as the political and administrative centre of the Maratha state until the British East India Company took control of Pune in 1818.
The complex was expanded by successive Peshwas, including Balaji Baji Rao, growing from its original structure into a sprawling fortified palace with multiple gates, of which the ornately carved Delhi Darwaza remains a notable surviving entrance. A devastating fire in 1828 destroyed most of the wooden palace superstructure, leaving behind the stone plinths, fortification walls and gateways that survive today.
Shaniwar Wada is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and remains one of Pune's most visited historical sites, with an evening light and sound show recounting the story of the Peshwas held within its walls.
