Sher Shah's Tomb in Sasaram was built to commemorate Sher Shah Suri, founder of the Suri Empire, who ruled North India in the mid-16th century and is widely credited with administrative reforms including the early Grand Trunk Road network. The mausoleum stands on a square platform in the middle of an artificial lake, reached by a causeway, and rises through several stories to a large central dome.
Considered one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic funerary architecture in India, the tomb's design, combining Lodi and early Mughal architectural elements with a distinctive octagonal plan and red sandstone construction, is regarded as an important precursor to later Mughal mausolea. The structure and its lakeside setting have made it one of Bihar's most significant protected monuments.
