The Site of the Mauryan Palace, within the Kumhrar excavation park about 6 km east of Patna Railway Station, preserves the archaeological remains of Pataliputra, capital of the Mauryan Empire under rulers such as Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka. Excavations at Kumhrar have revealed the remnants of a large pillared hall, believed to have been part of an imperial audience hall, along with monastery remains and evidence of an ancient drainage system.
The fragments of polished sandstone columns uncovered here, comparable in craftsmanship to the Ashokan pillars found elsewhere in India, point to the scale and sophistication of Mauryan-era construction at what was then one of the largest cities in the ancient world. The park today preserves these excavated foundations as an open archaeological site.
