Your Experience

St. Angelo Fort was built starting 24 October 1505 after Portuguese leader Francisco de Almeida received permission to construct it at Kannur (Cannanore). On 15 February 1663 the Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese and rebuilt it, adding the bastions Hollandia, Zeelandia and Frieslandia that remain the fort's major features today.

The Dutch sold the fort in 1772 to the Ali Raja of the Arakkal family, Kerala's only Muslim royal dynasty, based in Kannur. In 1790 the British seized it and used it as their chief military station in Malabar until Indian independence in 1947.

After independence the fort passed to the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains it today as a centrally protected monument of national importance.
