Your Experience

Chand Baori is a large stepwell in the village of Abhaneri in Rajasthan, built to conserve water and provide relief from the region's intense heat. It descends roughly 30 metres into the ground across thousands of narrow, symmetrical steps arranged in an inverted-pyramid pattern around a rectangular tank, making it one of the deepest and largest stepwells in India.

The stepwell is traditionally attributed to King Chanda of the Nikumbha dynasty around the 9th century CE, though no inscriptional evidence directly confirms its date of construction; stylistic comparisons with other regional stepped temples suggest an 8th-9th century origin. It stands adjacent to the Harshat Mata Temple, a shrine dedicated to the goddess of joy, which is associated with the same period.

The stepwell has undergone restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India together with the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation, most recently in 2019, and remains one of Rajasthan's most photographed pieces of historic water architecture.
