The Taipei Fine Arts Museum, established in 1983, is Taiwan's first public art museum and the largest modern art museum in Asia. It promotes the preservation, research, development, and popularization of Taiwan's modern and contemporary art.
Located in Yuanshan District on the banks of Keelung River, the museum building was designed by Gao Erpan Architects. The minimalist gray and white modernist style integrates the spirit of a Chinese courtyard house. Its architecture features a "well"-shaped main structure with cantilevered corridors, symbolizing cultural life.
The hall is bright and spacious, with exhibition spaces on both the third floor above ground and the first floor underground, surrounded by glass curtains for lighting. The atrium receives external light sources, presenting ecological landscapes of different levels of greenery, creating a tranquil public green space compatible with nature.
The museum organizes biennials that consider both Taiwanese and global characteristics, open submissions programs to connect and cultivate art ecosystems, and hosts domestic and international special exhibitions. It also plans various learning activities based on age and audience strategies, including lectures, seminars, guided tours, on-site exhibition dialogues, and exploration/experience courses through workshops.
The museum is closed every Monday. On Saturdays, it operates from 09:30 to 20:30, while Tuesday to Friday and Sunday hours are from 09:30 to 17:30. Touching exhibits is prohibited in the exhibition hall, and photography is allowed in moderation without flash or tripod unless otherwise stated.
