The Taj Mahal, one of the most iconic monuments of the world, is a masterpiece of the Indian culture and craftsmanship. It was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628-58 A.D.) as a garden tomb in remembrance of his late queen Mumtaz Mahal. The construction of the Taj Mahal started sometime between December 1631 to January 1632 under the superintendence of Makramat Khan and Mir Abdul-Karim. It took twelve years to complete the project at a total cost of Rs. 50 lakhs. The monument is situated on the right bank of the river Jamuna in the city of Agra. Being one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal represents the remarkable engineering skill as well as the aesthetic ideals of the period.
The construction of the majestic monument was done with ingenious architecture and exquisite artistic principles to build a robust but aesthetically pleasing monument. The external surface of the tomb building including its dome, drum, minarets, and interior of cenotaph chamber is lined with white marble veneering whereas all the other interior of all the other accessory buildings such as mosque, guest house, gates, etc. had been veneered with red sandstone.
Further, the surfaces of the monument were embellished with a rich variety of highly artistic and delicate inlaid ornamentations. The hues and the shades of the stones used to make the leaves and the flowers appear almost real. Ornamented within white marble, this petra-duera craftsmanship is a visual treat.
Due to its outstanding universal value, Taj Mahal had been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983. The monument is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfect proportions and exquisite craftsmanship have made it one of the universally admired gems of the world's heritage.
