The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the right bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, commissioned in 1631 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The main mausoleum was largely complete by 1648, with the surrounding mosque, guest house, and great gateway finished by 1653. Masons, calligraphers, inlayers, and dome-builders were brought in from across the Mughal empire as well as Central Asia and Iran, working under the chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori.
Set within a nearly 17-hectare Mughal charbagh garden, the complex is considered the high point of Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Islamic, and Indian design traditions. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1983, describing it as a masterpiece of human creative genius. A large buffer area around the monument, the Taj Trapezium Zone, restricts polluting industries to help protect the marble.
This ticket covers general entry to the Taj Mahal complex and its gardens. Entry into the main mausoleum chamber, where the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal lie, requires the separate mausoleum ticket.
