Your Experience
Perched along the Atlantic coast, La Rochelle's Tour Saint-Nicolas (14th century), Tour de la Chaîne (14th century), and Tour de la Lanterne (12th and 15th centuries) are remnants of an extensive fortification system established by the city. These towers have historically functioned as lighthouses, defensive structures, living spaces, and political prisons.
The largest tower is The Saint-Nicolas Tower, featuring walls up to six meters thick adorned with a complex network of stairways, passages, and rooms. A highlight here includes descending via either an easy staircase or the steep 'double helix' staircase.
Regarded as sacred during the Protestant era, the Chain Tower was originally built for monitoring port traffic. Today, it hosts exhibits illustrating La Rochelle's role in French migration to Canada.
The Lantern Tower, relatively newer compared to its counterparts and constructed with functionality in mind, served various purposes throughout the Middle Ages. As the only medieval lighthouse still standing on the Atlantic Coast, this tower features a remarkable collection of graffiti carved into its walls by pirates and prisoners who were once held there after it became a prison.
