Your Experience

The Tirumalai Nayak's Palace at Srivilliputhur is a 17th-century palace structure distinct from the better-known Thirumalai Nayak Palace in Madurai, though built in the same Nayak architectural tradition. It was declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1921, but for decades could not be reclaimed for restoration because local district courts were functioning within the palace premises. Once the courts vacated the site, the ASI took up preliminary conservation work, and personnel working to remove layers of lime coating from the walls uncovered wall paintings underneath. The ASI has also recommended the palace for inclusion on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
