Tirumayyam Fort was constructed in 1687 by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Raja of Ramnad, and later passed to his brother-in-law Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman. Originally built as a ring fort with seven concentric walls, only four now survive within its 40-acre grounds in the town of Thirumayam on the Pudukkottai-Karaikudi Highway. The fort holds particular significance in the Polygar Wars as the site where Oomathurai, brother of the Panchalankurichi chieftain Veerapandiya Kattabomman, was captured. The fort has three gateways on its north, south and east sides, with shrines to Hanuman, Sakthi, Ganapathi and Karuppar near the southern entrance and a shrine to Bhairava near the northern one. It was extensively renovated by the Archaeological Survey of India in 2012 and is maintained today as a ticketed monument.
