Tughlaqabad Fort was built between 1321 and 1325 by Ghiyasu'd-Din Tughlaq, founder of the Tughlaq dynasty, as the fortified capital of Tughlaqabad, counted among the historic cities of Delhi. Raised on rocky, elevated ground for natural defensive advantage, the fort was conceived as a stronghold rather than as an architectural showpiece, its battered grey rubble walls forming an irregular rectangle with more than six kilometres of fortification. The complex is laid out in two parts: a citadel and palace precinct along the southern walls, which survives largely intact, and a city area to the north, which today lies in extensive ruin, though the alignment of some of its streets can still be traced. Facing the main entrance to the south stands the tomb of Ghiyasu'd-Din Tughlaq, faced with red sandstone relieved by marble, enclosed within high walls forming an irregular pentagon. The fort remains under the protection and maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India.
