The Upper Fort of Bellary (Ballari) sits atop Ballari Gudda, a granite hillock rising roughly 50 metres above the surrounding town in what is now the Vijayanagara/Ballari district of Karnataka. It was built in the 16th century by Hande Hanumappa Nayaka, a local chieftain owing allegiance to the Vijayanagara Empire, as part of a broader strategy by Vijayanagara-era palegars of erecting hill forts to control the empire's northern frontier. The fort later passed through Bijapur, Maratha, Hyderabad and Mysore control, and was substantially strengthened by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in the 18th century before falling to British forces in 1799. It is now administered by the Archaeological Survey of India under its Hampi Circle, with conservation work focused on stabilising the ramparts and gateways, including the Patha Burj.
