Learn about German Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau, on this 3-hour walking tour through the metro of Vienna. When Vienna's parliament hired Otto Wagner in the late 19th century for a modern construction project, they aimed to complement the majestic buildings of the Ringstrasse and support the growing population.
Wagner chose Art Nouveau, creating designs for fences, doors, and stone carvings across Vienna's metro. The tour begins at Karlsplatz with a visit to the Wagner Museum. Along the way, you'll explore the famous Sezession art building and two apartment houses designed by Otto Wagner.
Your guide will delve into the philosophy of Art Nouveau, explaining symbols and materials used in designs. Originally built for the Emperor's use, this style demonstrated imperial support for the metro line. From here to Schönbrunn castle, you'll find elements of Art Nouveau within imperial grandiosity.
The tour explores two remaining iconographic stations and delves deeper into Viennese Art Nouveau. You will visit Stadtpark station, the best-preserved original metro station still in use, followed by Kettenbrücke station. The journey concludes at the Imperial station.
The tour lasts up to 3 hours.
